TRINITAS COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION
Moves High-Dose Radiation Service to New Environment
Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center (Trinitas CCC) now offers High-Dose
Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy within the comfortable environment of the Cancer
Center. Through a generous contribution from a now deceased donor who was a
resident of Elizabeth and active volunteer at Elizabeth General Medical
Center, Trinitas CCC was able to re-locate this service to its state of the
art 35,000-square-foot, five-story building on the campus of Trinitas Regional Medical Center. By doing so, patients are able to receive treatment comfortably
and conveniently within the Cancer Center.
"We applaud the generosity of Mr. Henry Hill 'Hank' Carroll," explained
Nadine Brechner, Executive Director, Trinitas Health Foundation. "This is
ultimately a gift to the patients who will benefit from being able to have
all of their treatments and visits in one location where they already feel
comfortable, rather then moving around from one area to another. From
everything I have heard about Hank, he was always helping our patients. His
legacy of caring continues."
High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy is a form of radiation treatment, also
known as interstitial irradiation. In Brachytherapy, a radiation source is
placed directly within or near the tumor site which allows for a faster and
more effective delivery of radiation treatment with the maximum dose given
where it is needed most. Through this technique minimal radiation reaches
surrounding healthy tissue.
"With this generous gift, we have been able to bring the HDR service into
the Cancer Center which continues to affirm our strong commitment to cancer
care," said Gary S. Horan, FACHE, President and CEO of Trinitas Regional
Medical Center.
Traditionally HDR brachytherapy has been used to treat cancers of the cervix
and endometrium, bronchus, esophagus, head and neck, and soft tissue
sarcomas. Currently at Trinitas CCC, HDR is used for Mammosite, endometrial
and cervical cancers, and Endobronchial Radiation.
"Thanks to this wonderful opportunity to relocate HDR into the Cancer
Center, we will be able to expand the HDR program significantly, including a
prostate HDR program in the near future," commented Clarissa Febles Henson,
MD, Chair of Radiation Oncology at Trinitas CCC.
